Behind the Bench: What a Custom Ring Actually Takes

I get asked a lot what "custom" really means when it comes to jewelry. Is it just picking a setting from a catalog and swapping the stone? Not even close. I wanted to pull back the curtain a little on what actually happens between someone's first email to me and the ring landing in their hands.

It usually starts with a story, not a sketch. Someone tells me about how they met, what their partner's style is like, a color they can't stop thinking about, or a ring passed down from a grandmother they want reimagined. I take notes on all of it, not just the technical specs, but the feeling they're going for. That part matters more than people expect.

From there, it's sketches. Sometimes three, sometimes ten, back and forth until something clicks. This is the part clients tend to love most: watching an idea in their head slowly become something real on paper, then in wax, then in metal.

Once a design is locked in, we source the stone (natural or lab-grown, whichever fits the vision and the budget) and the piece gets built entirely by hand, from a block of gold or platinum to a finished ring. No shortcuts, no templates. Every piece that's ever left my bench has been made from scratch, start to finish.

It typically takes 3 to 4 weeks max. I know that feels like a long time in a world of next-day everything, but a ring that's going to be worn every day for the rest of someone's life deserves that kind of care.
